USE GENTLY!

Calendula is well known for it’s amazing healing properties, rich & soothing to many skin conditions, also used frequently in Homeopathic skin remedies.

The name calendula comes from the Latin "calends", meaning the first day of every month. In its warm, native climate in Egypt and the Mediterranean, calendula is in bloom on the first day of the month throughout the year.

Calendula officinalis are known as the flower of the sun, with its petals of golden orange. This medicinal plant is sometimes called the pot marigold, to differentiate it from the smaller ornamental marigold, known botanically as Tagentes. The calendula is one of the best known and versatile herbs and is rich in herbal history. The bright orange petals are an excellent remedy for cuts and wounds, and their antiseptic and healing properties help to prevent the spread of infection and speed up the rate of repair.

Calendula flowers have always been associated with the sun's journey across the sky because they open when the sun rises and close as it sets. Culpeper and Gerard refer to calendulas as a comforter of the heart and spirits. In some traditions, the calendula is a symbol of endurance.

Healing Help

The key actions of this brilliant plant are the following: anti-inflammatory, astringent, heals wounds, antiseptic, antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, constricts the capillaries, (an action that explains its effectiveness for cuts, wounds, varicose veins, and various inflammatory conditions). The calendula provides effective treatment for most minor skin problems. It is used for cuts, scrapes, wounds, red and inflamed skin, including minor burns and sunburn, for acne, rashes, and fungal conditions. It is helpful for diaper rash and soothes nipples that are sore from breast feeding.

Calendula's healing properties were known to herbalists throughout the centuries. Calendula flowers contain an essential oil that has an antibiotic effect and lends the flower its characteristic scent. Other components include calenden, which also has a strong odor, the carotene-like dye calendulin, the therapeutic plant fiber mucilage, saponin, organic acids, various enzymes and resins. These components stimulate the immune system and enhance the body's fight against infection. It rapidly promotes tissue repair and minimizes scar formation, resolves inflammation, swelling, and exudate due to injuries, and reduces venous congestion.

As folklore history of this herb goes, it helps people to listen compassionately to others, to understand their message clearly, and to express warmth and caring in return. Would that be helpful to any family you know? This can be applied well to those in healing, teaching, or counseling professions, as well as to help authors to be aware of the power of the written word.
