St. John's Wort

Ovated leaved stems are covered with 1/2 inch bright yellow blooms in June. This herb has been used for centuries: during the Crusades to treat wounds and currently to treat mild depression. The fresh flowers are sometimes infused in olive oil and are used to treat pain in swelling.

  Folklore:

  St. Johnswort (Hypericum perforatum) is a perennial herb.  It is a familiar shrubby branching plant with yellow flowers.  Aerial parts used medicinally when crushed, they yield a bright red juice which is one of the hallmarks of this plant.  The Greens name it hypericon since it supposedly had magical properties.  The smell was believed to be strong enough to drive away evil spirits and purrify the air.  It was known as the herb of St. John since it is in full bloom on St. John's Day, June 24.  This herb has healing properties and has been used to treat bedwetting, insomnia and other nervous conditions.  Aids healing of wounds and burns.  The leaves have been used in salads and to make tea.  Used in Wiccan Spell work for purification and protection.
